Maple Leafs betting news: Auston Matthews scoring at a record pace for Toronto

Center Auston Matthews has maintained his high-scoring ways with an NHL-best 31 goals this season. Matthews captured the 2022 Rocket Richard Trophy as the NHL’s most prolific goal scorer that year with 60 (and followed up with 40 last season). He’s on pace to eclipse his career-high mark of 60 goals after 38 games.

Overall, the Maple Leafs rank seventh in the NHL with 136 goals through 38 games. Right wings William Nylander (21) and Mitchell Marner (21) combine with Matthews to form Toronto’s top trio of snipers. Nylander recently inked an 8-year contract extension with Toronto.

Goaltender Martin Jones has also played a big part in Toronto’s success to date. With a record of 8-3-0, Jones also boasts best save percentage in the league at .934%. His goals against average (1.98) ranks second in the NHL.

Jones is expected to get the start against the Islanders. The Leafs also use Ilya Samsonov (5-2-6) and Joseph Wolle (8-5-1) in their goaltending rotation.

The Maple Leafs are opportunistic in man-advantage situations. They rank just outside of the NHL’s top five in power-play percentage (27%) after converting on 31 of 155  power-play opportunities. In their most recent game — a 7-1 win over the San Jose Sharks — Toronto was 3-for-3 on the power play.

Toronto carries a four-game winning streak into Thursday’s game.

Islanders betting news: New York gives up massive amount of shots per game

The Islanders aren’t faring well in two key metrics when it comes to defense.

  • 35.1 shots allowed per game (third-worst in NHL)
  • 3.26 goals allowed per game (10th-most goals in NHL)

New York went 1-2-1 during its recent road trip out west, and the Islanders allowed 16 goals in those four games.

  • Canucks 5, Islanders 2
  • Golden Knights 5, Islanders 2
  • Islanders 5, Coyotes 1
  • Avalanche 5, Islanders 4 (OT)

If the Islanders want to have a chance to catch the rival Rangers for the Metropolitan Division lead, they’ll have to reduce turnovers in their defensive zone.

New York is No. 22 in the NHL in goals scored with 122 through 40 games. Centers Brock Nelson (team-high 19 goals) and Mathew Barzal (team-best 41 points) are the catalysts on offense.

Nelson scored both of New York’s goals in the 5-2 loss to Vancouver the last time out. Barzal assisted on one of those goals to record a point in his fourth consecutive game.

Barzal was recently selected to represent the Isles during 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend, which culminates with the All-Star Game on Feb. 3. This marks Barzal’s third NHL All-Star selection (2019 and 2020), and he previously won the fastest-skating competition.

Ilya Sorokin is New York’s lead goaltender. Sorokin is 12-8-8 on the season with a 3.26 GAA. Sorkin recorded 29 saves and allowed four goals in the loss to Vancouver, which is the highest scoring team in the NHL.

Maple Leafs vs. Islanders prediction

The Islanders have dropped four of their last five games, but will at least be playing at home for the first time since Dec. 29 in a 5-1 win over the Penguins.

Bo Horvat scored in the first minute of overtime to give the Islanders a 4-3 victory over the Maple Leafs in the first meeting between the two teams this season. That was also at UBS Arena.

That was in the midst of New York’s best stretch of the season when the Islanders won six of seven games. Things have changed, and not for the better where the Isles are concerned, and we expect Toronto to even the head-to-head slate on Thursday night.

Toronto extends its winning streak to five games.

Pick: Maple Leafs
