Why isn’t the NFL game on NBC tonight? Explaining Chiefs vs. Dolphins streaming exclusive broadcast

The second season in the NFL is officially underway, as the playoffs begin on Saturday.

Today’s slate features two AFC wild-card games, including a late-afternoon tilt between the Texans and the Browns. The prime-time matchup tonight features the defending Super Bowl champions against the league’s top offense this year.

The Chiefs host the Dolphins on Saturday night in the first round of the NFL postseason. The two met earlier in the season, taking part in one of the two NFL games played in Germany. Kansas City emerged victorious from that contest, defeating Miami 21-14.

NBC holds the rights to tonight’s game. However, for most football fans tuning into their local NBC broadcast, they won’t be able to find Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, or Tua Tagovailoa anywhere on their screens.

Here’s what you need to know about why Chiefs vs. Dolphins isn’t airing on NBC.

Why isn’t the NFL game on NBC tonight?

In today’s day and age, streaming services are taking over. While cable still draws in a massive amount of viewers, leagues have been catering more and more to services that require an additional payment in order to view the games on their apps. For the first time in NFL history, there will be a playoff game behind one of these kinds of paywalls.

“We are excited to work with a great partner in Peacock to present the first-ever exclusively live streamed NFL playoff game this upcoming season,” said Hans Schroeder, NFL Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of NFL Media. “Expanding the digital distribution of NFL content while maintaining wide reach for our games continues to be a key priority for the League, and bringing the excitement of an NFL playoff game exclusively to Peacock’s streaming platform is the next step in that strategy.”

Peacock reportedly paid the NFL $110 million to carry one exclusive postseason broadcast this year.

“As Peacock continues to grow, nothing says ‘must-have’ programming more than live NFL games,” said Kelly Campbell, President of Peacock and Direct to Consumer at NBCUniversal. “With the first-ever exclusive live streamed NFL Playoff game and our first exclusive regular season game, plus the entire season of Sunday Night Football and Football Night in America, and the Peacock Sunday Night Football Final postgame show, fans can stream the best of the NFL on Peacock all season long.”
