Alabama transfer portal tracker: Latest news on Caleb Downs, others who might leave after Nick Saban retirement

An end of an era in college football was marked when legendary head coach Nick Saban announced his retirement from Alabama in early January.

Saban is considered the best to ever do it, and his absence will be felt across the entirety of the sport.

Saban finished out his college football head-coaching career with an overall record of 292-71-1 … and too many accomplishments to fully list off.

That includes seven national championships, 11 SEC championships and one MAC championship. He also won the SEC Coach of Year award five times, the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award award twice, the Walter Camp Coach of the Year award twice and was twice named the Associated Press Coach of the Year.

With Saban’s departure, it is highly anticipated that multiple Alabama players will hit the transfer portal in search of greener pastures — and some already have.

Here are the Crimson Tide players who have confirmed they are entering the portal following Saban’s retirement.

S Caleb Downs:

Downs is by far one of the most prominent prospects set to enter the portal. The All-American safety was one of the top freshman in 2023 and already projects as a top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft despite his inexperience. His best football is very likely still ahead of him.

CB Trey Amos:

Amos was expected to be a starting cornerback for Kalen DeBoer moving forward, but that won’t be the case. After kicking off his career at Louisiana-Lafayette before joining Alabama, he’ll play for another team yet again. Amos saw action in all 14 games with the Crimson Tide, starting one, in which he recorded 12 tackles.

TE Amari Niblack:

Alabama employed a tight end heavy offense, so loss at the position, especially with a talent like Niblack is huge. Niblack was a solid piece within the Tide’s production, reeling in 20 receptions for 327 yards and 4 touchdowns last season.

LB Shawn Murphy (Committed to FSU)

Murphy’s role was expected to grow more at Alabama in the coming year, but that will happen with the Seminoles instead after the redshirt freshman totaled three tackles in 13 appearances in 2023.

IOL Terrence Ferguson (Committed to FSU):

In 2023, Ferguson totaled 116 snaps in 2023. According to PFF, Ferguson allowed just one pressure of 50 pass blocking snaps. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

CB Dezz Ricks (Committed to Texas A&M)

After visiting with the likes of Texas A&M and LSU, this 5-star former Alabama cornerback is now a part of the Aggies secondary. He’ll have four years of eligibility remaining.

WR Isaiah Bond (Committed to Texas):

Bond called it a “business decision” to transfer, admitting he ignored Kalen DeBoer’s attempt to try to retain Bond before he left for Texas. Bond led the Crimson tide with 48 receptions during the 2023 season. He finished out with 668 yards and 4 touchdowns.

“One hundred percent,” Bond told ESPN when asked if Saban’s retirement was a factor. “That was the decision why I left.”
