Deebo Samuel injury update: 49ers star receiver set to undergo tests after shoulder injury vs. Packers

Deebo Samuel exited the 49ers’ divisional-round win against the Packers in the second quarter with a left shoulder injury.

The star wide receiver’s status remained up in the air after Saturday’s 24-21 victory, which secured No. 1 seed San Francisco a spot in the NFC championship game.

Samuel missed a pair of games earlier in the season after sustaining a shoulder injury against the Browns in Week 6. He played just nine snaps against Cleveland, then was declared “out” for contests against the Vikings and Bengals. San Francisco lost all three games.

The 2023 campaign was another standout year for the versatile talent. He caught 60 passes for 892 yards and seven touchdowns, and he rushed 37 times for 225 yards and another five touchdowns. His 12 total touchdowns were the second-most of his career, trailing only his breakout 2021 season (14), when he was a Pro Bowler and first-team All-Pro.

Deebo Samuel injury update

Samuel exited the 49ers’ opening drive to be evaluated for a concussion, but he was cleared to return.

Soon after, though, he exited with a shoulder injury, returning to the San Francisco locker room in the second quarter. Fox’s Erin Andrews reported he went for more testing on his shoulder, and he was subsequently ruled out for the game.

After the game, though, Samuel told several members of the organization he was “OK,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. Schefter also reported the wide receiver has a chance to participate in the NFC championship game next Sunday.

Samuel is set to undergo tests Sunday to determine the severity of his ailment. Per Schefter, his biggest hope is that he avoided a hairline fracture in his shoulder, the same injury that saw him miss two games earlier in the season.

The 49ers will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Samuel, one of the most dynamic players in all of football and a supernova of sorts in the open field.

“Deebo is a fantastic football player,” tight end George Kittle said. “He’s amazing, especially the things that we ask him to do. When Deebo is in there and you match him with Christian (McCaffrey) and switch them around and stuff like that, it makes our offense what I think is different than any other offense in the NFL. So, am I concerned about him not playing next week? Yeah. We’re a different team without Deebo.”
