Is Rashee Rice related to Jerry Rice? Explaining the relationship between Chiefs WR, former 49ers star

The 2023 NFL rookie class showed out and then some this season. On offense alone, the likes of Puka Nacua, Tank Dell, Sam LaPorta, and, of course, C.J. Stroud, are all strong candidates to be Rookie of the Year.

However, there is a first-year player on the defending Super Bowl champions who isn’t getting as much love as he deserves — Rashee Rice.

The Chiefs first-year WR emerged this season as one of Patrick Mahomes’ favorite targets. Rice led the offense in receiving touchdowns (7), and he finished second in receptions (79) and receiving yards (938) to Travis Kelce.

As 49ers fans remember fondly, there was another Rice in the NFL that dominated at the wide receiver position — Jerry Rice. The three-time Super Bowl champion was a part of the Joe Montana and Steve Young eras in San Francisco during the 1980s and ’90s, and he leads the NFL in career receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, and all-purpose yards.

Of course, the Chiefs wide receiver has quite a ways to go before he’s even considered in the same conversation as the legend. However, if the youngster can build a repertoire with an elite quarterback like Mahomes, who knows what magic will be created in Kansas City.

So, is it just a coincidence that the budding star in Kansas City shares the same last name as the Hall of Famer, or is there a connection between Jerry and Rashee?

Rice’s senior year is what drew scouts to the wide receiver. The second-round pick put up 96 catches for 1,355 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in 12 games in 2022. In six of those contests, he recorded over 100 yards through the air.
