Jared Goff chant, explained: How Detroit fans are embracing Lions QB ahead of NFC championship game vs. 49ers

Lions fans can’t stop singing Jared Goff’s praises.

Detroit’s gunslinger is among the most popular figures in the Motor City at present, likely owing to the fact that he has the Lions on the brink of their first Super Bowl since … forever.

And it seems the adoration rings far beyond the walls of Ford Field — Goff’s usual home.

Numerous events, sporting and otherwise, have been soundtracked by a familiar murmur over the past few days. Goff’s name has swirled across concourses all across the state of Michigan, an unexpected but touching gesture for a player who just a few years ago looked in footballing limbo.

The most recent example of this trend occurred at Saturday’s Pistons-Wizards game at Little Caesar’s Arena. Partway through the third quarter, Detroiters broke out into a hymn honoring the achievements of their most prominent knight in shining armor, Goff.

They weren’t the only ones to perform such a ditty. Two days earlier, Red Wings fans stretched their vocal chords to honor Goff, serenading their beloved hockey team with an ode to Goff during Detroit’s 3-0 win over the Flyers.

The rhythm trickled into the lower levels of hockey, as well, enrapturing both Wolverines hockey fans and supporters of the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapid Griffins.

The kids are even getting in on the action. A high school cheer competition in the Great Lake State was backed by raucous tunes adorning the Lions QB on Saturday morning.

It seems Goff is the name on the lips of countless Michiganders — from the state’s glimmering shoreline to its urban centers in Detroit and Lansing.

Detroit’s signal-caller is more than appreciative of the love, too.

“These fans are unbelievable,” Goff said earlier in the week. “I expect to see a lot of them this weekend as well.”
