The second-ranked Purdue men’s basketball will look to extend its winning streak to six games when the Boilermakers host Big Ten foe Northwestern on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

Purdue center Zach Edey, the reigning College Basketball Player of the Year, scored his 2,000th career point in a 68-60 victory over Rutgers on Sunday.

Edey also became sixth player Big Ten conference history to have 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds.

It was Purdue’s first win at Rutgers since Feb. 3, 2018, snapping a three-game losing streak to the Scarlet Knights on the road.

The Boilermakers are 19-2 in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history.

Edey finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, 4 blocks and 1 assist en route to his 30th career 20-10 game, the second-most in Purdue history behind Terry Dischinger (48). Edey now ranks second in school history with 53 career double-doubles also behind Dischinger (54).

Edey now needs just three blocked shots to become the third player in NCAA history with 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 200 blocks and to shoot 60.0 percent from the field. 

Braden Smith had 19 points, six rebounds and two assists for Purdue. Smith surpassed 300 career assists in just his 56th career game (5.38 assists / game for his career). Lance Jones had four points, but added a career-high 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals. 

Northwestern has also been on a recent roll and and earned its second Top-10 win of the season, defeating No. 10 Illinois 96-91 in overtime on Wednesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Boo Buie led all Wildcats with 29 points, seven assists and three steals. Brooks Barnhizer tacked on 23 points, Ty Berry helped out with 14 points, and Matthew Nicholson added 12 points.

Northwestern shot 61.1% (11-for-18) from 3-point range — its best in a single-game since shooting 63.2% in a 91-71 win over Georgia Tech on November 30, 2010. The Wildcats shot a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc in overtime.

The win marks Northwestern’s first over a Top-10 Illinois since March 5, 1956.
