English Premier League table 2023/24: Updated EPL standings after Newcastle and Luton thriller

Arsenal were made to work hard against a resolute Nottingham Forest defence but second-half goals from Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka gave them a 2-1 win at the City Ground.

It moved Mikel Arteta to within two points of leaders Liverpool, although they had played a game more than Jurgen Klopp’s side. The gap was restored to five after the Reds thrashed Chelsea 4-1 at Anfield on January 31, setting up a mouthwatering clash between the leaders and the challengers at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Champions Manchester City are level with the Gunners following their comfortable home win over Burnley. Crosstown rivals Manchester United moved back into the top six with a convincing 3-0 victory at home to West Ham.

Aston Villa moved up to fourth with a 5-0 hammering of bottom club Sheffield United, putting Unai Emery’s side level on points with Arsenal and City. Newcastle United and Luton Town turned in an instant classic as they drew 4-4 at St James’ Park, while Chelsea were hammered again, 4-2 this time by Wolves at Stamford Bridge.

The Sporting News will update the table below and break down each of the key races throughout the 2023/24 season.

Champions League spots, European places 2023/24

The big news in 2023/24 is that there’s a scenario in which the Premier League could see the top five teams all qualify for the UEFA Champions League if England finishes as one of the top two performing nations in European club cup competitions.

If the FA Cup winner or Carabao Cup winner finish in the top four, the European cup berth that accompanies that title would go to the next team in the Premier League standings not already qualified for Europe.
