Man United vs West Ham final score, highlights as Alejandro Garnacho’s brace sees Erik ten Hag’s side cruise to victory

MANCHESTER, OLD TRAFFORD — What a week for Manchester United and their next generation.

While the potential of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho was already evident to those who have closely followed their development through the youth system, the 18-year-old’s injury-time winner at Molineux and Garnacho’s impressive brace against West Ham served as resounding reaffirmations of their capabilities.

United ran out 3-0 winners despite West Ham starting the better side. But the visitors’ confidence was thwarted when Rasmus Hojlund continued his excellent goal-scoring form.

The Danish striker picked the ball up 20 yards from goal, faked a shot which sent Nayef Aguerd the wrong way and fired home with his weaker foot past Alphonse Areola.

Garnacho doubled United’s lead moments after West Ham should have equalised. The 19-year-old cut onto his left foot and his effort deflected off Nayef Aguerd into the back of the net. For the Irons, Emerson picked the pocket of Harry Maguire and seemingly had all the time in the world to pick a corner to beat Andre Onana. He chose neither and blasted the ball high over the bar.

  Final score Goalscorer
Man United 3 Hojlund 23′, Garnacho 49′, 84′
West Ham 0

Garnacho celebrated by taking a seat on the advertising boards and was joined by Hojlund and Kobbie Mainoo. You get the feeling that image will be shared for the next decade, especially if that trio of youth talent reaches their immense potential.

The Argentine forward then added to his tally as Scott McTominay stole the ball off Kalvin Phillips and the 19-year-old calmly slotted into the back of the net.

The only negative to the afternoon came in the 70th minute when Lisandro Martinez was yet again forced off through injury as he couldn’t continue following an altercation with Vladimir Coufal. The Argentine defender only returned to action last month following a second operation to fix his metatarsal injury from last season’s infamous first-leg clash with Sevilla in the Europa League.

For United, it’s a perfect start to February but will face a tough test as they head to Villa Park next weekend.

Rasmus Hojlund 2023/24 goals and assists

The Danish striker became United’s major signing of last summer’s transfer window as he joined for £64 million from Serie A side Atalanta. Having just scored nine goals in 32 top-flight matches in Italy, a hint of risk surrounded the move.

That risk turned into a concern as it took Hojlund 15 league appearances to score his debut goal in the Premier League, despite scoring five in the Champions League group stages.

Since that debut goal against Aston Villa on Boxing Day, Hojlund has now scored in four consecutive league games and became the club’s youngest player in the club’s history to do so.
