Mikhail Sergachev injury update: Lightning defenseman undergoes surgery after gruesome leg injury vs. Rangers

The Lightning are going to be without one of their best defenders for an extended period of time — again.

In his first game back after missing the past six weeks because of a lower-body injury, Mikhail Sergachev suffered a gruesome leg injury Wednesday evening in the Lightning’s clash with the Rangers. The Rangers eventually won 3-1, but that was the least of Tampa’s concerns.

One of the leading point-scorers among defensemen in 2022-23, Sergachev was stretchered off the ice in obvious pain, and will not be available moving forward.

Here is more to know about Sergachev’s injury.

How long is Mikhail Sergachev out?

The Lightning announced that Sergachev underwent successful surgery on his left leg to “stabilize fractures to both the tibia and fibula.” The operation was done in New York.

The team stated that there is not timeline for Sergachev. He is expected to return to Tampa in the following days to start the rehab process.

The Tampa Bay blue liner posted on Instagram earlier in the day on Thursday, thanksing those that have reached out.

“Oh man, why me? Why now? After all the games missed, coming back and getting injured again, feels unfair, feels terrible,” the caption read. “Trying to stay calm and positive, but it’s impossible. After doing everything right I get this. The universe is unpredictable I guess, and has its own plans , but f— the universe man, I know I’ll come back stronger and I know I’ll play better than before, but it’s tough right now, and it’s gonna be tough tomorrow.

“We all fight our own battles and this is mine. I’ll win, always do. Pain meds are good tho, if I was in the forest by myself I’d be dead, crazy innit?! Wanted to write how I feel here, don’t know why, but just wanted to let people that care about me know! I appreciate all of your messages. Thanks to the medical staff.”

The 25-year-old attempted to send New York’s Alexis Lafreniere into the boards with a check. As Sergachev made contact with the Rangers forward, he appeared to get his left skate caught in the ice. Lafreniere’s skate then landed on Sergachev’s as he dropped toward the ice, prompting additional hyperextension.

Here’s a clip of the injury. Viewer discretion is advised.

Sergachev was in audible pain as Tampa Bay’s medical personnel tended to his wounds. He was eventually taken off the ice via stretcher. As Sergachev left the ice, he covered his face with his jersey. He eventually gave the Rangers faithful a thumbs up as he was taken to the dressing room.

Sergachev is a two-time Stanley Cup winner and a vital member of Tampa Bay’s back line. Slotting alongside right-hander Eric Cernak, Sergachev has 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) in 33 games this season.

The Lightning (27-19-5) sit fourth in the Atlantic Division with 59 points.
