Who is Andra Day? Meet the Super Bowl 58 ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ performer

Celestial objects ignite during Super Bowl weekend — and it’s not just on the field where people are thrust into immortality.

Anyone involved in the festivities is woven into the fabric of the sport’s history. Whether you’re a backup dancer involved in the halftime show or a groundskeeper hoping to manicure the turf perfectly before the contest, everyone plays a role in making the Super Bowl what it is — the biggest event in American sports.

Andra Day is one of four performers slated to take the pitch prior to Sunday’s big game. The award-winning actress and artist is no stranger to big stages, but this performance could be especially important to Day, as she’s tasked with delivering “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” colloquially known as the “Black National Anthem.”

Here’s what you need to know about Day, as well as James Weldon Johnson’s classic song, a symbol of strength for African-descended folks everywhere.

Who is Andra Day?

Day is one of the biggest voices in R&B and soul music. The 39-year-old singer is a Grammy Award and Golden Globe recipient, receiving the latter for her performance as famed jazz singer Billie Holiday in Lee Daniels’ epic, “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.” It was her acting debut.

Day’s career took off in 2010. It all started with a co-sign from Stevie Wonder, who phoned the then-25-year-old after his then-wife, Kai Millard, saw Day performing at a strip mall.

A contemporary of the internet age, Day used social media as a way to cultivate her brand. She recorded numerous covers, crooning to famous tunes from The Notorious B.I.G., Marvin Gaye, Amy Winehouse, and Lauryn Hill.

Day’s first studio album, “Cheers to the Fall,” was released in 2015 to critical acclaim. It featured contributions from Raphael Saadiq, Questlove, James Poyser, and DJ Jazzy Jeff, among others.

She’s gone from strength to strength in the years since. Now, she’ll bask in a different type of spotlight; sharing the stage with Reba McIntire, and Post Malone during the Super Bowl’s pregame festivities.

She seems more than pleased to get the opportunity to do so.

Andra Day net worth

‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ lyrics

Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears have been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, Our God, where we met Thee; Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand.
True to our GOD,
True to our native land
