Inter Milan vs Atletico Madrid live score, result, updates, highlights, lineups from UEFA Champions League Round of 16

In arguably one of the most balanced UEFA Champions League Round of 16 ties, Inter Milan take on Atletico Madrid.

The first leg gets underway in the San Siro before the return leg at the magnificent Civitas Metropolitan Stadium in Madrid — the stage for the 2019 final of this competition, when Liverpool defeated Tottenham.

Inter came runners-up to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in last year’s competition and will hope to continue their fine European form under Simone Inzaghi. With a nine-point advantage at the top of Serie A, the Nerazzurri are in a confident mood as they attempt to go one better than 2022/23 and become champions of Europe for the first time since 2010.

Atleti and Diego Simeone, on the other hand, will be looking to replicate their performance at the weekend, which saw them put five past Las Palmas in La Liga. Simeone won the UEFA Cup with Inter in a two-year spell at the club as a player, so this tie will have special significance for the Atleti coach.

The Sporting News will be following the Inter vs. Atletico match live, providing score updates, commentary, and highlights as they happen.

Inter vs Atletico Madrid live updates, highlights, and commentary

79th minute: GOAL! At last! Inter take the lead through Arnautovic after a horrendous mistake at the back from Reinildo. That led to the counterattack and Martinez struck his shot at Oblak but it was parried into the path of the Austrian substitute who makes no mistake this time.

77th minute: Another excellent ball in for Martinez to attack with his head, after brilliant movement in the box, but it’s one more shot that is directed right at Oblak.

73rd minute: Dumfries has just come on for the hosts and he’s causing Atleti some problems down the right flank. Can Inter finally find a goal in the last 15 minutes? They deserve one…

62nd minute: How are Inter still without a goal? Arnautovic blows another magnificent chance. He plays a perfect one-two with Martinez but leans back as he releases his shot, firing it high and wide from less than ten yards out.

60th minute: Inter have had 70% possession to start this second half but still have nothing to show for it.

49th minute: Another glorious opportunity for Inter! It’s the substitute, Arnautovic, who is sliding at the far post to meet a fantastic ball whipped in by Dimarco but he fails to test Oblak.

46th minute: The action resumes as the second half gets underway. Thuram makes way for Arnautovic after suffering an injury just before the break.

HT: That’s it for the first half. Will Inter rue those missed chances?

43rd minute: Another chance for Inter! Martinez’s ball is slightly behind Thuram but the French international manages to play a one-two pass with Barella before trying his luck. Again, it was a strike right at Oblak and he saves with ease.

38th minute: What a chance for Inter! Thuram uses his strength brilliantly to hold up play and pick out Martinez but the Argentine forward can’t dig the ball out from under his feet and Gimenez clears the danger.

37th minute: Barella whips in a cross for Martinez to attack and he does so well but the headed effort is right at Oblak. That’s Inter’s first shot on target.

32nd minute: Martinez has a go from distance but snatches at his effort and it rises high above the bar.

25th minute: In true Simeone knockout fashion, Atleti have come to Milan to counterattack. Inter are dominating possession but the Spanish giants are breaking up play well and preventing any real goal-scoring opportunities.

17th minute: Martinez knocks down the ball beautifully but the furthest forward for Inter was De Vrij! He can’t break in behind and is eventually stopped in his tracks by Gimenez.

10th minute: Atleti’s best spell of the match so far sees Griezmann find Lino down the left, he chips a ball to the far post but nobody is there for the Spanish side.

3rd minute: It’s a cracking atmosphere inside one of Europe’s finest stadiums tonight and the hosts have started well.

1st minute: We’re underway in Milan!

15 mins until kickoff: It’s a sell-out San Siro for tonight. The players have finished their warm-ups and kickoff is next…

30 mins until kickoff: A nice stat in favour of the Spanish side. Under Diego Simeone, Atleti have won five of their six games in the knockout stages of European competitions against Italian sides.

1 hour prior to kickoff: Team news is in. Here are the two sides for this evening’s clash.

1 hour 30 mins prior to kickoff: Inter will be tough to beat this evening. They’ve lost just one of their last 13 games in the competition and that defeat came in last season’s final against Man City.

2 hours prior to kickoff: More Champions League action! Who do you think advances from this pair of matches?
