Purdue vs. Rutgers odds, props, predictions: Boilermakers look to bounce back after tough road loss

No. 3 Purdue (23-3; 12-3 Big Ten) will try to get things back on track after losing just their third game of the season on Sunday to Ohio State. Tonight they take on Rutgers (14-11; 6-8 Big Ten) at home, where the Boilermakers are undefeated this season, making them heavy betting favorites to take down the Scarlet Knights.

While Purdue is 15-10-1 against the spread this season, the Boilermakers are just 5-5 ATS in their last 10 games, of which they’ve lost just one. Purdue’s powerhouse offense has helped them hit the OVER in all but nine games this season, including in six of their last 10.

The Scarlet Knights have an overall 12-13 ATS record, but are 3-2 against the spread in their last five games, a revitalized span in which they’ve gone 4-1. Rutgers has only hit the OVER eight times this season. Despite some additional offensive firepower, they’ve still hit the OVER just twice in their last five games.

Here’s more Rutgers vs. Purdue betting news, props and a betting prediction for tonight’s Big Ten showdown.

Purdue Boilermakers betting news

Purdue had to feel good going into their game against Ohio State this past Sunday. Sitting at No. 2 in the AP Top 25 poll and riding a nine-game winning streak, the NCAA tournament men’s basketball selection committee on Saturday had released a bracket preview of this year’s NCAA tournament, with the Boilermakers as the overall No. 1 seed.

But the Boilermakers fell to the Buckeyes 73-69, dropping a spot in the Top 25 and losing a little ground to now-consensus top overall tourney seed Connecticut. Ohio State won by taking advantage of Purdue’s 14 turnovers, scoring 22 points off of them.

Purdue’s potent offense is second only to Alabama in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency and they have the toughest strength of schedule KenPom rating.

Purdue’s offense runs through reigning College Basketball Player of the YearZach Edey, who gets swarmed whenever he touches the ball but still averages 23.2 points per game, third-best in the country. The 7-foot-4 senior center also has the 20th best-shooting percentage in the nation (61.3%). Averaging 2.3 blocks, Edey is equally intimidating on defense. His 11.9 rebounds per game is third-best in college basketball.

The Boilermakers’ 84.4 points per game ranks 10th in the country. Edey gets a lot of help from sophomore guard Braden Smith, who averages 12.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 7.2 assists.

Purdue fended off Rutgers 68-60 in their last matchup, a late January game in New Jersey. In that game, Edey had 26 points and 12 rebounds, while Smith added 19 points (shooting at a 70% clip) and senior guard Lance Jones nabbed 10 rebounds and posted eight assists.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights betting news

Currently ninth in the Big Ten standings, Rutgers comes into West Lafayette fresh off of a road loss to Minnesota. But the Scarlet Knights won four straight before that, including a dominating 78-56 dismantling of No. 11 Wisconsin. Rutgers has won against two of the three teams to have beaten Purdue this season — Nebraska and Northwestern.

Rutgers’ defense is strong, ranking second on KenPom for adjusted efficiency. The Scarlet Knights limit opposition field goal percentage to just 39.8% and they’re second in non-steal turnover percentage and fourth in block percentage. Senior center Clifford Omoruyi leads the team with 3.3 blocks per game.

Omoruyi averages 11.2 points and nine rebounds per game, while big senior guard Aundre Hyatt adds 11 points and 4.8 rebounds. The Scarlet Knights got a huge offensive boost when junior guard Jeremiah Williams was finally cleared to play in early February after missing the first 20 games. Rutgers is 4-1 since Williams began starting and he now leads the team with 13.2 points per game. Williams had a season-high 18 points and seven assists in the team’s win over Wisconsin earlier this month.

Rutgers has played Purdue tough in recent years. The Scarlet Knights have won five of their last eight meetings, including their most recent game in West Lafayette in 2023, when the Boilermakers were the top-ranked team in the country. That 65-64 Rutgers victory was one of the just three games Purdue has lost at home in the last three seasons.

In their meeting earlier this month, Smith had 19 points, Hyatt had 15 and Omoruyi 13, as the Scarlet Knights nearly pulled off another upset. Rutgers shot 50% and outscored Purdue  in the second half 40-35, getting within two points late before the Boilermakers pulled away in the final five minutes.

Purdue vs. Rutgers prediction: Scarlet Knights will keep it close

Purdue will be ready for the Scarlet Knights, with a new sense of focus after the Ohio State loss. But Rutgers has had a renewed swagger since Williams hit the floor earlier this month, and his additional offense (which wasn’t there when the teams met in January) could be key. If not outright win, the Scarlet Knights should at the least cover the spread.

Pick: Rutgers
