Andrew Wiggins family matters: Latest updates on why Warriors forward is not playing

The Warriors are trending in the right direction ahead of the season’s final stretch. For the moment, they’ll have to continue to do so without forward Andrew Wiggins.

Wiggins last suited up for the Warriors on Feb. 25 against the Nuggets. He’s missed Golden State’s last four games leading into Wednesday’s home meeting with the Bucks.

Wiggins’ need to step away from the team comes as he was finding his stride on the court. After a largely rough start to the season, Wiggins averaged 15.3 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 53.5 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from 3-point range in his last nine appearances.

Before his latest absence, Wiggins had missed just five of Golden State’s first 56 games. It is worth noting that last season, Wiggins missed the final 25 games of the regular season to tend to a family matter. He returned to appear in each of Golden State’s 13 playoff games.

Even with his most recent surge, Wiggins is averaging a career-low 12.7 points per game over 51 games. With the Warriors’ experimental rotations, he was moved to a reserve role for the first time in his career before being re-inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 12.

Here are the latest updates on Wiggins’ absence and when he could return to Golden State’s lineup.

Why is Andrew Wiggins not playing for the Warriors?

Wiggins is listed as out due to an ongoing personal family matter.

Golden State first listed Wiggins out for the team’s Feb. 27 meeting with Washington, citing personal reasons on the NBA’s official injury report

No specifics regarding Wiggins’ family matter have been provided. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr told reporters, “We’ll respect Andrew’s wishes for this to remain private … and go from there.”

Without Wiggins, Kerr has inserted third-year guard Moses Moody into the starting lineup.

When will Andrew Wiggins return?

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported on March 5 that Wiggins was expected to return to team activities after tending to a “serious family matter.”

Shortly after Charania’s report, video was shared on social media of Wiggins at practice.

Since falling five games below .500 in late January, Golden State has won 13 of its last 17 games. With a 32-28 record, the Warriors are currently in 10th place but are within four games of the sixth seed with 22 games to go.
