UConn vs. Marquette prediction ATS, player props, odds for Wednesday, March 6, Big East matchup

UConn has clinched the Big East and will visit a Marquette team struggling without point guard Tyler Kolek. The Golden Eagles lost to Creighton in a blowout in their first game without Kolek and are now struggling to hold onto second place in the Big East. They’ll be without the star guard tonight against the high-powered Huskies.

Marquette is 17-11-1 against the spread this season and has hit the OVER in three of its last four. After losing big to UConn 81-53 a few weeks ago, tonight’s matchup looks challenging without Kolek.

The Huskies have looked excellent all season and appear poised to defend their national title from last season. UConn has made most opponents look inferior this season with an 18-11 record against the spread and a 26-3 overall record. The Huskies also clinched the Big East championship with two games left in conference play.

Here is the UConn vs. Marquette betting news, props and a prediction for tonight’s Big East Conference matchup. The game tips off tonight at 8:30 p.m. on FS1.

UConn Huskies betting news

The Huskies look ready to defend their national championship, boasting the fourth-ranked adjusted offensive efficiency in the country and the 17th-ranked adjusted defensive efficiency. The Huskies have played the 77th-ranked strength of schedule, and it remains to be seen if there is an opponent that can challenge them when they are playing their best.

UConn lost their top two scorers from last season’s squad, but last year’s role players have turned into this season’s stars. The addition of star freshman Stephon Castle (11.3 PPG) and one of the nation’s top transfers in Cam Spencer (14.8 PPG) has given the Huskies an arguably even more talented team this season. Tristen Newton has taken on the lead scorer role, averaging 15.3 PPG, but he does much more than provide points as the team’s leading rebounder (7.1 RPG) and leader in assists (6.0 APG).

The 6-foot-5 senior is a nightly triple-double threat and the key to everything the Huskies do. Add in the excellent supporting cast, including double-digit scorers Alex Karaban (13.9 PPG) and Donovan Clingan (12.6 PPG), and the Huskies simply have an embarrassment of riches.

They also have the size to give opponents problems on both ends of the floor — every starter is at least 6-foot-4, and 7-foot-2 center Donovan Clingan (2.2 BPG) ranks in the top 20 in the nation for blocked shots. Even when opponents get past the first defender, finishing at the rim is not an easy task.

Marquette Golden Eagles betting news

The Golden Eagles are an excellent team at full strength and could be a contender in the NCAA Tournament. But Tyler Kolek’s oblique injury is a serious concern — the defending Big East Player of the Year will likely be back this season, but oblique injuries can be tricky and often have a high risk of recurrence.

Kolek was the best basketball of his career before the injury, improving almost all of his stats this season. He is shooting a higher percentage from the field (47.1% to 48.6%), three (39.8% to 40%), scoring more points (12.9 PPG to 15.0 PPG), averaging more assists (7.5 APG to 7.6 APG) and grabbing more rebounds (4.1 RPG to 4.7 RPG).

The only slight positive from Kolek’s absence is that it could give another guard like Stevie Mitchell (8.5 PPG) or Chase Ross ( 6).5 PPG) a chance for more touches. Mitchell shoots 28.8% from three, and Ross shoots 39.2%. If either could use the extra touches to get hot from three and provide players like Kolek and Kam Jones (16.1 PPG) better floor spacing, it could help spark a deep NCAA Tournament run.

UConn vs. Marquette prediction: UConn takes advantage of shorthanded Eagles

Marquette would have stood a good chance to get revenge on UConn if they had Kolek. Without their best player, it is doubtful this contest will stay close, and what’s most important for Marquette is getting healthy for a tournament run.

Pick: UConn
