Are Liverpool playing in the Europa League this week? Schedule for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds in UEFA tournament

Destination Dublin. Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour at Liverpool is in full swing and the UEFA Europa League poses the perfect opportunity for him to bow out on top.

The Europa League final will be held in the Republic of Ireland’s capital city on May 22 and, as they’re currently fighting on four fronts, Klopp has the potential to do something special ahead of his departure.

The 56-year-old announced in January that he was to leave the club at the end of the season after admitting his energy levels aren’t quite the same after nearly nine seasons at the helm.

However, he did state he wasn’t throwing in the towel just yet and insisted he has enough left to see him through to the end of this season — one that could yet finish as one of the most successful in Liverpool’s storied history.

So, when does Liverpool’s European journey resume? The Sporting News takes a look at the Reds’ schedule and their potential path to the final.

Having cruised through their group stage as winners back in the first half of the season, Liverpool earned themself a bye to the Round of 16, bypassing the knockout playoffs.

This means that the Reds were out of European action in February but have now been drawn against Sparta Prague in the round of 16.

The first leg took place on March 7 and will be held in the Czech Republic. It ended in a one-sided 5-1 victory for the visitors, with Darwin Nunez scoring twice. They will then host the Czech side at Anfield on March 14.

How does the 2023/24 Europa League knockout stage work?

The eight group winners will be the seeded teams for the Europa League Round of 16. They will be drawn against the winners of the eight playoff ties, which begin on March 7, 2024.

At this point, the Europa League becomes a straightforward knockout competition. The team that wins via aggregate score in the two-legged Round of 16 ties progress to the quarterfinals — another two-legged affair — which take place on April 11 and 18.

The quarterfinal winners go on to the semifinals on May 2 and 9, from which two teams will reach the final.

If scores are level after both legs, extra-time and then penalties if needed, will decide the winner.
