NFL free agents 2024: Best players still available at each position, including Ryan Tannehill & Mike Williams

NFL free agency has had a fast and furious start in the 2024 offseason. Teams have wasted no time in the new league year, signing, trading, and releasing players to reform their rosters.

Although the first few waves of moves have been made with much of the best veteran talent no longer on the open market, there is still some valuable personnel help out there ahead of the April draft.

Here’s an updated look at who’s left unsigned after the early free-agent signing period:

NFL free agents 2024: The best players still available at each position

  • Ryan Tannehill, Titans
  • Tyler Huntley, Ravens
  • Jimmy Garoppolo, Raiders
  • Josh Dobbs, Vikings
  • Carson Wentz, Rams
  • Trevor Siemian, Jets
  • Easton Stick, Chargers
  • Blaine Gabbert, Chiefs
  • Brian Hoyer, Raiders
  • Josh Johnson, Ravens

Tannehill and Garoppolo, just released, might be the last two viable bridge options. The rest are more seasoned backups.

Running backs

  • AJ Dillon, Packers
  • JK Dobbins, Ravens
  • Ezekiel Elliott, Patriots
  • D’Onta Foreman, Bears
  • Alexander Mattison, Ravens
  • Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Chiefs
  • Jerick McKinnon, Chiefs
  • Rashaad Penny, Eagles
  • Cam Akers, Vikings
  • Latavius Murray, Bills
  • Matt Breida, Giants
  • Boston Scott, Eagles
  • Damien Harris, Bills
  • Kareem Hunt, Browns
  • Joshua Kelley, Chargers
  • Cordarrelle Patterson, Falcons

Dillon, Elliott, and Foreman have the most appeal as power backs. Most of the rest are change-of-pace options or depth chart fliers.

Wide receivers

  • Mike Williams, Chargers
  • Marquise Brown, Cardinals
  • Tyler Boyd, Bengals
  • Curtis Samuel, Commanders
  • DJ Chark, Panthers
  • Odell Beckham Jr., Ravens
  • Michael Thomas, Saints
  • K.J. Osborn, Vikings
  • Josh Reynolds, Lions
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Chiefs
  • Hunter Renfrow, Raiders
  • Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Titans
  • Allen Robinson, Steelers
  • Isaiah Hodgins, Giants
  • Cedrick Wilson, Dolphins
  • Randall Cobb, Jets
  • Parris Campbell, Giants
  • Mecole Hardman, Chiefs
  • Laviska Shenault, Panthers
  • Van Jefferson, Falcons
  • Richie James, Chiefs
  • Deonte Harty, Bills

Williams shouldn’t last long after his release. Brown will find a home as a field-stretcher soon, and there are several more of those available here. Boyd and Samuel lead the slot charge. Beckham is looking for another chance after flashing in Baltimore. Thomas will hope to revive his career out of New Orleans.

Tight ends

  • Hayden Hurst, Panthers
  • Robert Tonyan, Bears
  • Logan Thomas, Commanders
  • C.J. Uzomah, Jets
  • Tanner Hudson, Bengals
  • Ross Dwelley, 49ers
  • Chris Manhertz, Broncos

There’s not much here except limited recycled receivers and backup blockers.

Offensive tackles

  • Tyron Smith, Cowboys
  • Trent Brown, Patriots
  • David Bakhtiari, Packers
  • Mekhi Becton, Jets
  • Donovan Smith, Chiefs
  • Charles Leno Jr., Commanders
  • Yosh Nijman, Packers
  • Brandon Parker, Raiders
  • Chuma Edoga, Cowboys

Tyron Smith and Bakhtiari still have something worthwhile left here for the left side with their Pro Bowl pedigrees. Brown is a versatile option. Becton still has the potential to be a reliable starter.

  • Kevin Zeitler, Ravens
  • Connor Williams, Dolphins
  • Coleman Shelton, Rams
  • Dalton Risner, Vikings
  • Cody Whitehair, Bears
  • Andrus Peat, Saints
  • Laken Tomlinson, Jets
  • Brian Allen, Rams
  • Jon Feliciano, 49ers
  • Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Lions
  • Mason Cole, Steelers
  • Tyler Shatley, Jaguars
  • Mark Glowinski, Giants
  • Lucas Patrick, Bears
  • Matt Feiler, Buccaneers
  • Dan Feeney, Bears

Zeitler has been solid for 75 percent of the AFC North. Williams and Shelton can start well as inside snappers. The rest are mostly fading backups for rotational depth.

Edge rushers

  • Chase Young, 49ers
  • Jadeveon Clowney, Ravens
  • Mike Danna, Chiefs
  • Derek Barnett, Texans
  • Romeo Okwara, Lions
  • Yannick Ngakoue, Bears
  • Charles Harris, Lions
  • Carl Lawson, Jets
  • Randy Gregory, 49ers
  • Emmanuel Ogbah, Dolphins

Young and Clowney still have plenty of appeal as situational pass rushers and have been getting plenty of interest. There’s not much to see with the rest.

Defensive tackles

  • D.J. Reader, Bengals
  • Arik Armstead, 49ers
  • Teair Tart, Titans
  • Calais Campbell, Falcons
  • Quinton Jefferson, Jets
  • Shelby Harris, Seahawks
  • Austin Johnson, Chargers
  • Taven Bryan, Colts

Teams in need of this position have snatched up the better tackles. Reader still has appeal as a run-stuffing starter. Armstead will need to be a reclamation.

  • Tyrel Dodson, Bills
  • Devin White, Buccaneers
  • Jerome Baker, Dolphins
  • Tyus Bowser, Ravens
  • Isaiah Simmons, Giants
  • Cody Barton, Commanders
  • Denzel Perryman, Texans

Only Dodson and White seem certain to land somewhere. The former is coming off a solid season with Buffalo, and the latter is fading a bit for Tampa Bay.

  • Steven Nelson, Texans
  • Kendall Fuller, Commanders
  • Stephon Gilmore, Cowboys
  • Xavien Howard, Dolphins
  • J.C. Jackson, Patriots
  • Adoree’ Jackson, Giants
  • Tre’Davious White, Bills
  • Patrick Peterson, Steelers
  • Avonte Maddox, Eagles
  • C.J. Henderson, Panthers
  • Jourdan Lewis, Cowboys
  • Rock Ya-Sin, Ravens
  • Levi Wallace, Steelers

The names are bigger than the remaining games here, but there are a few plug-and-play veteran outside starters who will be picked up later.

  • Kamren Curl, Commanders
  • Justin Simmons, Broncos
  • Jordan Fuller, Rams
  • Jamal Adams, Seahawks
  • Julian Blackmon, Colts
  • Eddie Jackson, Bears
  • Marcus Maye, Saints
  • Quandre Diggs, Seahawks
  • Jayron Kearse, Cowboys
  • Adrian Amos, Texans
  • Mike Edwards, Chiefs
  • Keanu Neal, Steelers
  • Nick Scott, Bengals
  • Tashaun Gipson, 49ers
  • Micah Hyde, Bills

Curl is a big-time impact player who won’t last much longer. Simmons leads a group of once solid all-around options who can now provide only limited playmaking returns.
