Valdez (31-2, 23 KOs) is coming off a heartbreaking 12-round unanimous decision loss to fellow Mexican Emanuel Navarrete in August. Despite being favored to win that bout, Valdez was unable to keep the naturally bigger man off and struggled with his aggression and intensity.

“I’m not looking for easy fights,” said Valdez in an interview with ProBox. “I’m coming off a loss to Navarette, so this is a great opportunity for me to step back in there. We know that whoever wins this fight is a step closer to a world title fight.”

Wilson (13-2, 7 KOs) also lost to Navarrete last year. However, the Australian managed to knock the Mexican hero off his feet before succumbing to a ninth-round stoppage. His performance in that fight indicates just how dangerous he can be at the top level. And while he respects Valdez, Wilson is not overawed.

“I’ve looked up to all the Mexican greats, [Marco Antonio] Barrera, [Erik] Morales, [Juan Manuel] Marquez, and in some sense, I’m fighting the modern-day version of them — Navarrete, now Valdez — and I just feel privileged to be in there with these guys,” Wilson told The Sporting News.

“When I say that, I’m not in there to make up numbers and just to compete, I’m in there to win… and I’m very confident I’m coming away with the win on March 29.”

Oscar Valdez vs. Liam Wilson prediction, best bets

This promises to be a terrific fight and the styles are sure to gel.

Valdez is a clever boxer with nice skills and a high ring IQ. However, with Mexican blood in his veins, he’ll never completely shy away from a firefight and that is precisely what his opponent intends to bring.

Wilson is the naturally bigger man and he’s even mentioned the possibility of moving up to lightweight. He won’t be intimidated by Valdez’s power and it will take a lot to discourage him.

The difference in this fight is likely to be class and experience. While Valdez is not big at the weight, he has the requisite skills and punch variety to quell Wilson’s attacks.

When Wilson slows down, expect Valdez to pick his spots and secure a clear points win down the stretch.

Sporting News prediction: Valdez UD 12 (Per BetMGM: -400)
