UNC vs. Alabama live score, updates, highlights from March Madness Sweet 16 game

Neither Alabama nor North Carolina were high in the preseason AP Top 25 poll. The Tar Heels and Crimson Tide ranked 19th and 24th, respectively. Nonetheless, both squads have reached the Sweet 16, proving they’re some of the best teams the NCAA has to offer.

Fourth-seeded Alabama has a potent offense, perhaps the strongest in college basketball, averaging an NCAA-leading 90.7 points per game. The Crimson Tide are also third in offensive rating and fourth in offensive efficiency.

Senior guard Mark Sears leads this squad with 21.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game on 50.7 percent from the field and 43.5 percent from 3. He’s aided by graduate-student transfer Aaron Estrada (13.3 ppg) and senior transfer Grant Nelson (11.4 ppg).

The Sears-Estrada backcourt will need to slow down top-seeded UNC’s point guard RJ Davis, who leads the team with 21.3 points per game on 43.6 percent from the floor and 41.1 percent from 3.

Davis, a senior, has established a high-low combo with Armando Bacot, a fifth-year big. He’s averaging 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds on 54.5 percent from the field while providing elite defense.

That’s something the Tar Heels do well, as Kenpom ranks them as sixth in defensive efficiency. UNC’s offense is 20th in points per game at 81.8.

The key will be limiting fouls, as both teams struggle to keep their opponents off the foul line. UNC is allowing the eighth-most free throws per game and Alabama allows the 11th most.

Both squads also draw fouls well, too. The Tar Heels make the 15th-most free throws per game; Alabama makes the seventh-most. The offenses suggest a high-scoring game, but constant trips to the foul line could slow the pace down.
