Men’s and women’s teams in Final Four: NC State becomes latest school to pull the March Madness double

It’s not often college basketball fanbases get treated to two Final Four basketball games in the same year. After all, the postseason is called, “March Madness” for a reason.

But in the long history of postseason basketball, there have been a few, rare instances in which the same school has had a men’s and women’s team reach the Final Four in each of their respective brackets.

In 2024, NC State became the latest team to accomplish the feat, and they did so the hard way. The Wolfpack men’s team came in as the No. 11 seed in the tournament while the women’s team took down No. 1 Texas in the Elite Eight to punch its ticket to the Final Four.

The Huskies have pulled off the feat four times. Twice among those four did both teams win the national championship and the other two times, at least one of the two programs won the title.

Of the other programs, only Duke in 1999 had both the men’s and women’s team reach the national championship. Three times both teams lost in the Final Four.

This year’s NC State teams tied 2016 Syracuse for the highest combined seed number between the two squads, with both adding up to 14. No other years saw the combined seeds equal any number higher than eight. The Orange men were ranked No. 10 in their region while the women came in at No. 4. The Wolfpack men are the No. 11 team in their region while the women came in at No. 3.

Should the UConn women’s basketball team reach the Final Four in 2024, it would be the first time a year featured multiple schools placing both their men’s and women’s teams in the Final Four. It would also leave open the possibility of both national championships coming down to NC State vs. UConn.

Have a men’s and women’s team won the national championship in same year?

UConn has pulled off the dual national championships twice in program history. In 2004, the Huskies won both the men’s and women’s titles after both teams entered the tournament as No. 2 seeds.

The teams accomplished the feat again in 2014, this time with the men as a No. 7 seed and the women as a No. 1 seed.
