Indiana State vs. Seton Hall final score, results: Pirates storm back in final minutes to win 2024 NIT championship

Both Indiana State and Seton Hall got a second chance at finishing their season on top after missing out on the NCAA Tournament, and both played their hearts out until the very end of the NIT championship game.

The Sycamores and Pirates fought tooth-and-nail on Thursday night, a stark contrast to the many teams that opted out of the event before it began, but it was Seton Hall who prevailed with a furious late-game comeback.

Seton Hall spent more of the game in front than behind, but it was a game of runs. Each time the Pirates tried to give themselves a comfortable lead, Indiana State simply refused to quit.

The Sycamores’ final run came deep into the second half when they turned a one-point deficit into a seven-point lead in a matter of 80 seconds. Indiana State went to timeout up 77-70 with 2:54 remaining, but 77 was where Josh Schertz’s team would finish. Seton Hall finished the game on a 9-0 run, taking the lead on a layup by Dre Davis and holding on after a stout defensive possession ahead of the final buzzer.

Al-Amir Dawes got nothing but buckets for the Pirates, scoring 24 points with only one rebound and no assists, while Kadary Richmond impressed with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Robbie Avila was held to 13 points in Indiana State’s loss, finishing 4-of-10 from the field

Seton Hall and Indiana State each believe they should have been in the NCAA Tournament. Had it not been for a surprise number of bid-stealers, they would have been. They played like teams with chips on their shoulders, and Shaheen Holloway’s Pirates walked away with a title and higher expectations ahead in 2024-25.

A dream season for Indiana State ends in disappointment, and the future of Schertz β€” who’s expected to be hired by Saint Louis University β€” will come into focus in the days ahead.
