Former ESPN analyst claims drafting Drake Maye will get you fired

Drafting a franchise quarterback is one of the hardest things you can do. The hit rate isn’t very high but when you find that player, it will change things exponentially for the future of your franchise. Picking the wrong one can also get you fired.

The current quarterback class has brought out some extreme opinions from both sports media and NFL fans in general. It’s bound to happen with a deep quarterback class like this one but they have been seemingly more extreme than in years past.

During a radio spot on Minnesota’s WCCO, former ESPN analyst Merril Hoge had one of those opinions, claiming that drafting North Carolina’s Drake Maye will get you fired.

“Drake Maye is the kind of player that will get you fired,” Hodge said. “Especially if you draft him in the top five or top three, he’s going to get you fired.”

The reality here is this. If you pick the wrong quarterback, you are likely to get fired. It’s just the nature of the National Football League. Most general managers and head coaches who whiff that high don’t keep their jobs very long. Now, there are exceptions as Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have both kept their jobs, but they also just made the Super Bowl in 2023.

Is Maye going to be a bust? Well, he’s not a slam dunk. There are some accuracy issues that need to be ironed out, especially in the middle of the field. There are a lot of positives that Maye possesses which could help him turn into one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League.

What will happen with Maye? Only time will tell, but he’s the number one quarterback on my board and the second overall player. He doesn’t look like a bust to me.
