Liverpool vs Atalanta final score, result as Reds defeated in first leg by magnificent Gasperini side

Liverpool’s 33-match unbeaten home run has come to an end as they were torn to pieces by Atalanta in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal.

Klopp’s side looked lethargic and perhaps struggled to motivate themselves given the priority will be the Premier League, but what has the manner of defeat done to their confidence at such a crucial time of the season?

Gian Piero Gasperini’s Italian side stuck to their game plan throughout the 90 minutes and Liverpool couldn’t handle them. Atalanta hit Klopp’s men on the break at pace and in numbers as they hounded the Reds into making mistakes and then were brutal in front of goal.

Gianluca Scamacca’s brace saw La Dea storm to a 2-0 lead on the hour mark before Mario Pasalic capitalised on Dominik Szoboszlai’s error in the middle of the park.

It was 14 months ago that Liverpool were last defeated at Anfield and that came at the hands of Real Madrid when they were beaten 5-2. Like that night, they were convincingly beaten this evening and there can’t be any credit taken away from the Serie A side.

  FT Goalscorers
Liverpool 0
Atalanta 3 Scamacca 38′, 60′, Pasalic 83′

Liverpool’s created good chances on the night but their best were wasted by Darwin Nunez, a somewhat reoccurring theme this season.

Harvey Elliott also struck the bar early in the first half after a curled effort on his left foot but it was inches too high.

Klopp has only lost five of his 43 home games in charge of Liverpool in Europe and Atalanta became the first team to do it twice.

Unless there’s a remarkable turnaround in Italy, the Anfield faithful may have just observed what was likely to be Klopp’s last European night on Merseyside.

52nd minute: Van Dijk’s header from the corner is too high and sails over the bar.

46th minute: The second half is underway! Let’s see what Klopp’s halftime speech has done to this side.

1 hour 30 mins before kickoff: Klopp was speaking to TNT Sports about how the Europa League is different to playing in the Premier League.

He said: “Before the season nobody saw us as contenders, that is the truth. Nobody said: ‘Let’s see what Liverpool can do’. After the season we played [last season], I can understand that. We got new players in and no one knew exactly how it would work out. So being in it and now all of a sudden getting the role handed [to us] that we have something to lose, I just don’t understand that. I don’t understand it.

“You cannot be the challenger all year and no one expects you to be there and then you are there and all of a sudden you can lose it. It makes no sense. The United game, look, it is strange times. In the last three weeks, we’ve been to United twice, played two really good games and just don’t win. One we lose, which is crazy but it is football and it happens. The next game, it is just a game where we get a point and we’d still be in the race if we lose there, it is still possible.

“But of course a point, after the game it definitely felt like we lost two but now it feels like a point gained. Now that is not important in the moment because this is another competition and it is not a distraction it is just a different focus.

“We were for a long time in four competitions and now there are only two left and yes, it is intense and I would like us to give it a go and let’s see what we make of it. I am very happy with the situation we are in in the league and in Europe. Yep, challenging, exciting, but positive as well.”

2 hours before kickoff: Liverpool have only lost one of their 25 home matches in the UEFA Europa League, when they were defeated 3-2 to Udinese in October 2012. They’ve won their last nine in a row at Anfield, what will tonight have in store?
