Are Anthony Davis and LeBron James playing today? How eye and ankle injuries impact Lakers prop bets

The Lakers always serve as a team nobody wants to face around this time of year. However, if Anthony Davis and/or LeBron James can’t suit up, they become a much different team.

With the playoff push in the West as close as ever, how will Friday night’s status of AD (eye) and LeBron (ankle) impact the Lakers in the prop betting and playoff markets?

The Lakers’ recent loss to Golden State — coupled with the Warriors’ win over Portland on Thursday — has helped Steph Curry and company leapfrog L.A. for ninth place in the NBA Play-In Tournament standings.

In order for Bron and company to reclaim the ninth seed, they will need to win out Friday vs. Memphis and Sunday in New Orleans. They will also need Golden State to lose one of its games, as the Dubs are tied with L.A. with the head-to-head tiebreaker.

What’s the status of Davis’s eye? Will LeBron sit tonight if AD comes back? We’ll provide you with full updates and help you understand how either superstar’s absence will affect the NBA betting odds

Anthony Davis eye injury: Status, latest updates

As of right now, AD has been listed by Darvin Ham and the Lakers as probable to play in Memphis this evening with his eye injury. Davis got poked in the eye against the Warriors last month, and he apparently re-aggravated the eye injury earlier this week against the Wolves.

Davis missed the Lakers’ most recent tilt with the Warriors on Tuesday, and Golden State took full advantage by winning 134-120. Now every game for L.A. has become “must-win” if Los Angeles wants to avoid entering the Play-In Tournament as the last seed.

LeBron James knee injury: Status, latest updates

LeBron has been listed by Los Angeles as questionable for tonight’s game against the Grizzlies due to left ankle peroneal tendinopathy. He has missed 10 of the Lakers’ 56 games since Dec. 13, about a 18 percent sit rate.

We can’t see Bron not suiting up for this game. Even against the lowly Grizzlies — who have desperately missed All-Star Ja Morant since his injury — we don’t see the King sitting in a must-win situation. The Lakers have tomorrow off (as does the entire NBA) and L.A. will likely do everything it can to avoid being the lowest seed in the Play-In.

Anthony Davis & LeBron James status: How their injuries impact player props

If AD becomes a late scratch tonight — which is entirely possible given that he suffered from nausea and dizziness due to his eye injury earlier this week — James might go off. Take a look at Bron’s stats the past three games that Davis has been inactive:

Date Game Points Rebounds Assists
4/9 vs. Warriors 33 7 11
3/27 @ Grizzlies 23 14 12
1/30 @ Hawks 20 9 8
AVG   25.3 10.0 10.3

No big deal — Bron’s just averaging a triple-double at age 39 over the past three games his most talented teammate sits. With James clearly locked in and focused on getting L.A. an optimal seeding for the postseason, we would bet his OVER on points up to 28.5 and assists up to 10.5 if Davis sits tonight.

Now let’s look at Davis’s stat projections if Bron doesn’t suit up. AD has played four complete games without James active since Valentine’s Day. Here’s how Davis fared in those contests:

Date Game Points Rebounds Blocks
3/26 @ Bucks 34 23 4
3/8 vs. Bucks 22 13 3
2/22 @ Warriors 27 15 3
2/14 @ Jazz 37 15 2
AVG   30.0 16.5 3.0

Just like Bron without AD, AD without Bron has been dominant. And these games aren’t cupcake-matchups, either! Davis may have his hands full with Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Grizzlies tonight, but we like him to rise to the occasion with or without LeBron.

AD has averaged 25 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and four blocks over his two tilts with Memphis this season. If Bron isn’t active, we like him to go OVER his points total up to 24.5, his rebounding total up to 13.5, and his blocks total up to 2.5.

Anthony Davis & LeBron James status: Best bets if both stars suit up

Here’s AD and LeBron’s current stat projections and player props on BetMGM, which seems to be assuming both stars will suit up:

Player Points Rebs. Asts. Blks
LeBron James 24.5 6.5 7.5 2.5
Anthony Davis 22.5 13.5 2.5 0.5

If both players suit up, we like them to both go OVER their current points projections of 24.5 and 22.5. We’re more interested in AD’s 13.5 rebounding OVER if James doesn’t suit up, but we like Bron OVER 6.5 boards with or without AD. Eight assists should be fairly easy for LeBron to reach against a banged-up Memphis team, and Davis OVER 2.5 blocks also feels like a layup of a prop bet.

Be sure to check back throughout the day, as we will provide updated information on James and Davis the moment the Lakers update their injury report.
