Borussia Dortmund vs Atletico Madrid final score, result as Fullkrug, Sabitzer fire BVB into Champions League semis

Borussia Dortmund reached the semifinals of the Champions League after an exhilarating 4-2 victory over Atletico Madrid.

Dortmund suffered for large periods of the first leg but carried on where they left off and had the help of the amazing Signal Iduna Park crowd.

Edin Terzic’s side took the lead on the night when Mats Hummels clipped a brilliant ball to Julian Brandt in the 18-yard box. The German took a touch before getting the better of Jan Oblak, who really should have done better.

The Bundesliga club then went ahead on aggregate thanks to Ian Maatsen. Marcel Sabitzer backheeled the ball to Maatsen, who took a touch before beautifully finding the bottom right corner.

  2nd Half Goalscorers
Dortmund 4 (5) Brandt 34′, Maatsen 39′, Fullkrug 71′, Sabitzer 74′
Atletico 2 (4) Hummels (OG) 49′, Correa 65′

Atleti were not, however, going to go down without a fight. Mario Hermoso won a header at the back post and Hummels tried to clear but ended up poking the ball into his own net early in the second half.

Angel Correa worked a great opportunity to take the lead as he looked to slide a ball past Gregor Kobel but it went just inches wide. Diego Simeone fell to the floor with his hands covering his face in disbelief.

Correa turned his fellow Argentine’s frown upside down a few moments later. Antoine Griezmann’s effort from the left was parried into the path of Correa, whose first-time effort on the rebound was blocked on the line but he followed up by smashing it into the roof of the net.

Brandt then immediately had Dortmund on the attack and played a through ball down the left for Sabitzer to loop a cross to Niclas Fullkrug, who guided his header to the far corner and it went in off the post. That left Simeone calling for calm from his side.

Those instructions fell on deaf ears as Atleti then conceded the goal that sealed Dortmund’s place in the semifinal. Sabitzer picked the ball up on the edge of the D before taking a touch into the box and firing past Oblak. He got a hand to it but the precision from the Austria international was too much for the Atleti goalkeeper to handle.

Simeone was left scratching his head as a competition where he has been one of the enduring presences of this era eluded him once more.
