Texans’ UDFA class among least valuable per 2024 NFL Draft consensus board

The Texans didn’t have the best 2024 NFL Draft, but Houston added necessary pieces as the team looks to make a championship run in 2024.

Houston signed just six undrafted free agents after the team picked nine in the 2024 Draft, splitting between six offensive players and six defensive players.

Player Position College
British Brooks RB North Carolina
Jadon Janke WR South Dakota State
Jaxon Janke WR South Dakota State
Pheldarius Payne EDGE Virginia Tech
Max Tooley LB BYU
Tarique Barnes LB Illinois

None of those six players ranked in the top 300 of the consensus 2024 NFL Draft board, per Arif Hasan. Therefore, the combination of the number of players the Texans signed (third-fewest in the NFL) with their valued gave Houston one of the lowest total class grades for undrafted free agents.

Texans’ UDFA class among least valuable

Hasan compiled the most valuable UDFA class for “Wide Left,” which attributed a number value for each player based on their rankings in the consensus board. So, a higher-ranked player who went undrafted netted the team that signed him more points. The Vikings ranked first with a total value of 8,943, while the Falcons ranked last with a total value of 1,721.

The Texans, meanwhile, ranked 28th on the list with a total value of 3,046. They beat out the Steelers (2,923), Cardinals (1,851) and the aforementioned Falcons.

This isn’t the worst thing in the world for Houston. The Texans spent the sixth-most money in free agency on players like Danielle Hunter, traded for Stefon Diggs and Joe Mixon and filled in the cracks with a solid draft class.

More than likely, these UDFAs won’t be more than training camp bodies and/or practice squad players. The hope for Houston is that the team’s current core is good enough to compete in the AFC with the likes of the Chiefs, Ravens and Bills in 2024.
