Mexico predicted squad for Copa America 2024: Projected final roster, player list with Lozano on fire at PSV

Mexico are back on the Copa America stage this summer after missing out on the previous two tournaments.

On the back of reaching the quarterfinals back in 2016, El Tri were not involved in 2019 and 2021. Despite those absences, Jaime Lozano’s side are amongst the dark-horse candidates for glory in the USA.

A run into knockout stages is the minimum expected for Mexico after being dropped into Group B alongside Ecuador, Venezuela and Jamaica for the competition.

Lozano has hit the ground running since taking charge of the national side back in June 2023, leading them to the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup title last summer.

The timeless Guillermo Ochoa will captain Mexico at the Copa America, but the double return from injury of Hirving Lozano and Raul Jimenez is the key news for the squad as they prepare to head over the border.

Mexico predicted squad for Copa America 2024

Lozano is expected to keep faith with the majority of the squad that delivered Gold Cup success less than 12 months ago with the bulk of his key players plying their trade in Europe this season.

Lozano and Jimenez will come in to bolster his attacking options but Santiago Gimenez has been in electric form for Arne Slot’s Feyenoord in 2024.

Who’s definitely in?

Ochoa is the undisputed No.1 for Lozano with Julio Gonzalez and Luis Malagon providing back-up to the 38-year-old.

Mexico’s defence came in for some criticism following their CONCACAF Nations League final loss to the USA in March, but Johan Vasquez, Cesar Montes and Jesus Gallardo remain vital for El Tri.

West Ham United star Edson Alvarez is the midfield fulcrum with plenty of creativity alongside him in the Mexico engine room.

The main calls for Lozano come in attack, with Santiago Gimenez and the coach’s namesake, Hirving Lozano, certainties to make the cut. Experienced operator Raul Jimenez has been eased back into action at Fulham following an injury-disrupted 12 months, but he may not be an instant starter.

Whose place is at risk?

Lozano has looked to bring some fresher faces into the panel in recent squads and the main call will be over whether or not to recall some veterans who face a battle to be included.

Nestor Araujo has not featured under Lozano and looks set to miss out as he continues to recover from a serious knee injury. Houston Dynamo midfielder Hector Herrera may also fail to make the cut.

Jonathan dos Santos was included in the preliminary CONCACAF Nations League squad and, after playing a consistent role with Club America this season, Lozano could bring him in for extra experience.

Who could be a wildcard pick?

Mexico fans will not be expecting too many shocks from Lozano but former LA Galaxy midfielder Efrain Alvarez might have played his way back into contention  after signing for Tijuana last summer.
