Lightweight gold is on the line when former champions Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. face off on May 11. The IBF title fight in Australia airs on ESPN+ in the U.S.

Lomachenko is a former two-division champion and was once considered the king of the lightweights. The 36-year-old is 3-2 in his last five fights, losing a close contest last May against Devin Haney for undisputed lightweight gold. It was his first attempt at fighting for gold since losing titles against Teofimo Lopez in 2020.

The Ukrainian has fought in and out of the ring, facing the best in boxing while representing his country against Russian aggression
. At the latter end of his career, Lomachenko knows he will hang the gloves up soon. First, he looks to reclaim his status as champion.

“But my career is almost done, of course. How many years it’s going to be one, two, three, that’s it. But I still think I have a little bit of power. It’s a hard question [when will I retire exactly],” Lomachenko told Fox Sports Australia via Boxing News 24/7. “At this stage, every fight is hard. It’s hard to recover after fights. I don’t know what will happen with my body after this fight, and that’s why I can’t give you an answer to this question [of when I will retire].”

Kambosos, 30, is a former unified lightweight champion, beating Lopez for the belts. After losing against Haney twice in Australia, “Ferocious” has also looked to prove he deserves to be champion again. A controversial win against Maxi Hughes, leading to this opportunity, didn’t help his cause.

Regardless, a decisive win against Lomachenko could also prove he belongs in the conversation as an all-time great.

“This victory cements my legacy, this puts me into the Hall of Fame. Kambosos versus Lomachenko,” Kambosos to Top Rank via DAZN. This is about legacy, this is about two warriors trying to prove something to each other and to the boxing world, right here in Australia. Two legends, It doesn’t get any bigger.”
