Two former world champions look to return to the top of the lightweight division when Vasiliy Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. face off for the IBF lightweight title.

A seven-time gold medalist, including a two-time Olympic gold medalist, Lomachenko turned pro in 2013. Lomachenko beat Gary Allen Russell Jr. in 2014 for the WBO featherweight title and Roman Martinez in 2016 for the WBO super featherweight title. Moving divisions. again, Lomachenko beat Jorge Linares in 2018 for the WBA lightweight title, Jose Pedraza for the WBO title, and Luke Campbell for the WBC belt. 

The Ukrainian lost the titles against Teofimo Lopez and won three in a row after, defending Ukraine against Russian aggression between fights. The 35-year-old lost a close contest in May 2023 against Devin Haney for the status of undisputed lightweight champion and now has another opportunity at gold after Haney relinquished the belts to focus on super lightweight.  

“I’m very happy to come back. I’m very happy to be fighting there. This is the right fight because it’s a chance to be a world champion again. And I’ve never been to Australia. I’ve always wanted to go, and it’s a good opportunity,” Lomachenko said. “Right now, my goal is to become a world champion again. After that, I can start thinking about becoming undisputed.”

A two-time Australian National Championships silver medalist, Kambosos turned pro in 2013. The Aussie beat Lopez for the lightweight belts Lomachenko lost, but lost them against Haney in his backyard in June 2022. Losing a mandatory rematch, Kambosos recovered in July with a decision win against Maxi Hughes. Kambosos believes more than just gold is on the line. 

“This fight rejuvenates my career. This gives me my redemption. Yes, I’ve won the big fights, and I’ve lost the big fights. But for me, this fight is about legacy. Two warriors coming together for a big fight. Our careers are on the line here,” Kambosos said. “Legacy is on the line here. And I believe this is my destiny.”
