Juan Soto responds to potential contract talks with Yankees

The New York Yankees want star Juan Soto
to wear pinstripes for the rest of his career, but

After Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner told Jack Curry of YES Network that he wants Soto in pinstripes for life, Soto’s agent responded by saying he’s open to discussing a potential deal during the season.

This is somewhat of a different situation than Yankees fans are expected. Typically, clients of Scott Boras wait until free agency to negotiate so they can test the market. In a similar light, the Yankees also typically wait until after the season to sign pending free agents to extensions.

But Soto also mentioned Thursday that the door is always open to begin those discussions.

“My door has always been open,” Soto said Thursday. “Whenever he wants to start talking with Scott and all those people, they’re always open to hear whatever he has. For me, I just focus on the game right now.”

After Steinbrenner’s comments, Curry also reached out to Boras, who was open to the idea of in-season discussions.

“Always happy to talk with Hal. Juan is getting to know the Yankee organization. His singular focus is winning,” Boras said via Curry.

Soto has been everything the Yankees could have wanted when they made the big trade for him this offseason. He has a .302 batting average to go along with a .920 OPS, nine home runs and 34 RBI.

Soto’s .402 on-base percentage is top-10 in MLB and the second-highest in the American League.
