Man United next manager: Tuchel, Pochettino and McKenna on shortlist to replace Erik ten Hag

Manchester United are reportedly going to part ways with Erik ten Hag after the FA Cup final against Manchester City on Saturday regardless of the result.

Ten Hag took charge in May 2022 and led United to a third-place finish in the Premier League, a Carabao Cup triumph and an FA Cup final in his debut campaign.

But his second season in charge has been packed with adversity from reported ructions in the dressing room to takeovers and a mammoth injury list.

United finished eighth in 2023/24, their lowest ever in the Premier League and they failed to reach the Champions League knockout stages. They can only qualify for Europe next season by beating City on Saturday to snatch a Europa League spot

The Sporting News rounds up the men rumoured to be in the running to replace Ten Hag.

Has Ten Hag been sacked?

United’s FA Cup final preparations were overshadowed by the exclusive report from The Guardian that emerged on Friday afternoon in the UK.

For now, though, it remains speculation as United claim no decision has been made as they conclude their review of a chaotic season.

Who will be next Man United manager?

Mauricio Pochettino

A recent addition to the shortlist following his dismissal from Chelsea earlier this week, but this is not the first time Pochettino has been linked to United. The Argentine excelled at Tottenham and the stars might finally have aligned for him to take the plunge at Old Trafford.

Thomas Tuchel

According to The Guardian, Tuchel is the leading candidate and is keen on a return to the Premier League. A 2020/21 Champions League winner with Chelsea, he led Bayern to the semifinals of this season’s competition. That prompted the Bayern board to try and row back on their decision to get rid of him at the end of the campaign but Tuchel wasn’t for turning.

Kieran McKenna

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s former assistant at Old Trafford has become hot property since leading Ipswich Town to the Premier League via back-to-back promotions. Brighton and Chelsea have also been noted as admirers of the 38-year-old, but the lure of returning to United could be something else.

Thomas Frank

One of the more low-key candidates on this list, Frank inflicted a couple of notable humiliations upon Ten Hag. The first came when his Brentford side ransacked United 4-0 in August 2022. Back at the Gtech Stadium this season, Brentford claimed a 1-1 draw despite falling behind to a Mason Mount goal against the run of play deep into stoppage time.

Gareth Southgate

England manager Southgate has continuously been linked with the United role since INEOS’ assumed control of United’s football operations in February.  While Dan Ashworth has yet to assume his role as sporting director, both he and Sir David Brailsford have existing relationships with Southgate.

Ashworth appointed him as England Under-21 manager and praised Southgate as an “exceptional leader” following England’s run to the semifinals in the 2018 World Cup. The Three Lions’ participation at Euro 2024 presents an obvious complication and a potential PR nightmare for United if he is their chosen option.

Graham Potter

Afar more available coach and another man presumed to be an INEOS favourite is former Chelsea and Brighton boss Potter. However, he has not worked since being sacked by Chelsea in 2023 and that failure in his first high-profile job would mean particularly suffocating scrutiny if he were appointed at Old Trafford.
