Barcelona vs. Lyon prediction, odds, betting tips and best bets for Women’s Champions League final 2024

Barcelona look to reinforce their position at the summit of European football and get revenge for a bitter defeat two years ago as they take on Lyon in the 2024 UEFA Women’s Champions League final.

The Spanish giants have won two of the last three Champions League titles, with 2021 and 2023 victories sandwiching a 2022 final defeat to today’s opponents in stunning fashion. In that game, Barca found themselves shell-shocked with three Lyon goals in the first 33 minutes, unable to recover as they fell to a 3-1 defeat.

They nearly found themselves in a similar position in last year’s final, but secured a return to the top of the mountain last season by engineering a multi-goal comeback, turning around a 2-0 halftime deficit to German side Wolfsburg to win 3-2 on a 70th minute winner by Fridolina Rolfo.

Lyon romped to the Division1 Feminine title, winning by an 11-point margin over PSG, while also beating their domestic rivals in the semifinals of the Champions League to reach this stage.

Adding to the desperation of this match, both managers are also highly likely to depart their club after this game. Lyon boss Sophia Bompastor is leaving the club to take over for Emma Hayes at Chelsea, while Barcelona boss Jonatan Giraldez is reportedly jetting across the pond to take over NWSL club Washington Spirit.

Barcelona vs. Lyon prediction, odds for Women’s Champions League

  • Moneyline lean: Lyon (+475)
  • Score prediction: Barcelona 2-3 Lyon

While both of these teams have been traditionally dominant over the past half-decade of European football, neither has been quite as Herculean as they have been in the past. Barcelona benefitted greatly from a truly hideous refereeing error, while Lyon were given multiple lifelines by poor PSG finishing in their semifinal.

In truth, it’s probably more likely that Barcelona come away with the victory here, but this match is far more evenly matched than the odds suggest — so much so, that there is significant value on a Lyon victory, while there’s absolutely none presented by nearly 1/3 odds to the Spanish favourites. Backing the French side presents a real opportunity in a game that is probably more a 60-40 percent split in actuality.

And right on cue, the line movement has reflected that idea. Lyon at one point were +575 underdogs on 90 minutes and +350 to win the trophy, but that has seen them drop down to +475 to win outright and +290 to lift the trophy the day of the match. Meanwhile, Barcelona went from -275 favourites on 90 minutes and -600 to lift the trophy to -225 and -450 respectively, and that number could continue climbing before kickoff.

There is, quite simply, an overwhelming wealth of attacking talent on both ends of the pitch in this match. The Lyon midfield and wingers are in good attacking form, and Barcelona boast a glutton of forwards and wingers at the top of the global women’s game.

This selection has hit in five of the last six Champions League finals, with the only outlier being the 4-0 Barcelona victory over Chelsea in 2020/21 which featured a smothering Barca back line that conceded an outlandish five goals in 26 league matches.

Neither of these two clubs hang their hat on an overwhelming defensive setup, preferring to overwhelm opponents with a powerful build-up. Between Caroline Graham Hanson, Ada Hegerberg, Salma Paralluelo, Eugene Le Sommer, Claudia Pina, Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas, and so much more, there will be goals in this game.

Barcelona vs. Lyon prop bet for Women’s Champions League final

  • Pick: Half with most goals — 1H
  • Odds: +190 (BetMGM)
  • Pick: Barcelona to win 1H and over 1.5 total goals
  • Odds: +240 (BetMGM)

Both these teams shine the brightest before halftime, looking to overwhelm their opponents and leave them no way back into the match.

Barcelona especially have been dominant before the break — in their last eight matches between domestic and continental play since the start of their Champions League semifinal first leg against Chelsea on April 20, Barcelona have scored 37 goals, of which an incredible 24 were scored before the break. What’s more, of the four goals they conceded in that span, all of them came in the first half.

Looking at the recent Champions League finals, of which Barcelona have been consistent participants, tells the same story — across the last six Women’s UCL finals, 16 of the 27 goals were scored before the halftime break, including all four goals in the last meeting between these two sides in 2022 and all four of Barcelona’s in the 4-0 win over Chelsea the year before that. There’s no way these two teams don’t come out of the gates trading haymakers.
