Yankees won’t rush DJ LeMahieu back amid Jon Berti injury

New York Yankees utility infielder Jon Berti suffered a scary calf injury Friday night and is expected to be placed on the injured list.

After hobbling off the field without being able to put any weight on his left leg, it’s likely that Berti is going to miss a significant amount of time.

Manager Aaron Boone said following the 8-0 win that Berti is expected to go on the injured list, and that the Yankees will call up another infielder.

Boone mentioned the Yankees won’t cut DJ LeMahieu’s rehab short as he wraps up what is expected to be his final stint in Triple-A.

It’s likely the Yankees will call up Kevin Smith, who was with the team during spring training and made the active roster to begin the season. However, he was designated for assignment on April 18 and then sent outright to Triple-A on April 20.

For those wondering about Oswald Peraza, who was activated last week, the Yankees want him playing every day so calling him up for a few days isn’t in the plans, per Jack Curry of YES Network.

Hopefully, Berti’s injury isn’t as serious as it looked, and the super utility player can make a return sooner rather than later.
