When is the College World Series? Start date, TV schedule, brackets & more for 2024 NCAA baseball tournament

When the college baseball season began, it looked like the 2024 title would be Wake Forest’s to lose. The Demon Deacons came up just shy in the College World Series last year, and appeared to have baseball’s most loaded roster on paper.

But you know what they say: that’s why they play the game. Wake Forest has had its struggles throughout the season, including going .500 in ACC play. Meanwhile a wave of SEC teams have commandeered the top of the field led by No. 1 Tennessee.

Everything before Friday no longer matters, however. At least, not for the 64 teams assigned to regionals in the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. For teams like Wake Forest that have underperformed, it’s a chance at redemption to prove they’re built for the postseason. For teams like Tennessee, it’s a chance to prove their regular-season success was no mirage.

And for plenty of others, it’s the chance to come out of the woodwork and shock the world, pull off some upsets and make a Cinderella run to Charles Schwab Field Omaha.

How does the College World Series work?

The College World Series is an eight-team tournament comprised of the final teams left after the NCAA baseball tournament. Teams will battle in the regional and super regional, with both stages being double elimination.

The postseason for college baseball has already begun with college tournaments having wrapped up. Teams have now been sent to different college towns for regionals, which are four-team brackets. There, any team that loses twice will be eliminated until only one team is left.

The 16 regional champions will advance to the super regionals, where the highest-seeded teams will host a best-of-three series. The eight super regional winners will all book flights to Omaha to compete in the College World Series.

The field will then be divided into two, four-team brackets. It is again set as a double elimination bracket. The winners of each bracket will meet in a best-of-three series to determine the national champion.
