Braves Could Target Red Sox Slugger As Strong Ronald Acuna Jr. Replacement

The Atlanta Braves took a big hit when superstar outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. sustained a season-ending knee injury.

With that said, the Braves still are seen as one of the more notable forces in the National League and will be pushing their chips in as the July 30 Major League Baseball trade deadline nears.

While pitching remains a priority, it would be wise to find an outfield rental to mitigate the loss of their best player. The outfield market is light this summer but there are some options. Among them, Red Sox’s Tyler O’Neill would be a logical target.

O’Neill is hitting .250 with 17 extra-base hits including 11 home runs, 18 RBIs and a .854 OPS (137 OPS+) in 44 games played this season.

The impending free agent would fit well into the Braves’ short-term needs and will almost certainly go to the highest bidder at the deadline. Boston sits at 33-33 and planned to use the season to develop young talent before making a stronger push in 2025 or later. It’s expected that the Red Sox will sell off O’Neill alongside a slew of players on expiring contracts.

O’Neill would provide an offensive boost to a Braves’ lineup that has underachieved thus far, ranking No. 18 in MLB with 279 runs scored through 63 games. He’s also a two-time Gold Glove winner who has predominantly played right field for Boston.

The Braves have plenty of prospect depth to deal from and should not wait too long to see what it would take to acquire O’Neill next month.
