David Benavidez vs. Oleksandr Gvozdyk fight results, schedule for 2024 boxing fight

There was a collective sigh of relief from the best super middleweights in the world when rampaging pressure fighter David Benavidez decided to move up for a light heavyweight matchup against former WBC champ Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15.

The 12-round bout takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and will air on Prime Video. It will serve as the co-main event ahead of the WBA lightweight championship fight between Gervonta Davis and Frank Martin.

Known as “The Mexican Monster”, Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) has been causing havoc at 168 pounds since turning professional in August 2013. However, despite having held the WBC title twice in this weight class, the 27-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona, has been unable to procure an undisputed title fight with division king Canelo Alvarez.

Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs) is a classy boxer-puncher from Ukraine. The 37-year-old veteran took bronze at the London 2012 Olympics and was a member of the same team as boxing greats Oleksandr Usyk and Vasiliy Lomachenko. In 2018, he defeated Adonis Stevenson for the WBC title before losing a unification fight against Artur Beterbiev 10 months later. He was out of the ring for three years but has returned with three straight wins.

The Sporting News will provide a full report on Benavidez’s light heavyweight debut and results from the rest of the card.
