Jude Bellingham Euro 2024 stats, goals: How Real Madrid midfielder shone while England stuttered to opening win vs. Serbia

For all the understandable talk of a talent-stacked roster around this England squad at Euro 2024, one man stood tall on their opening night against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.

A 1-0 win that started brightly and became something akin to an ordeal after halftime had bright moments. Bukayo Saka, who occasionally appeared jaded down the home stretch of a grueling EPL season with Arsenal, was back to his effervescent best on the right wing.

There had been plenty of question marks over an England defence compromised by injury, but John Stones and Marc Guehi came through the test during the second half. As Declan Rice expertly snuffed out danger in front of them, Serbia were largely restricted to shots from distance.

But the undisputed star of the show was Jude Bellingham. Heading to Germany on the back of talismanic showings en route to glory in LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid, the 20-year-old midfielder headed the only goal of the game from Saka’s deflected 12th-minute cross.

Bellingham matched his feat from Qatar 2022 of scoring England’s tournament opener, becoming only the second player after compatriot Michael Owen to score at both a European Championship and a World Cup before turning 21.

The former goal set in motion a contrasting and swashbuckling 6-2 win over Iran. As the numbers below show, often against Serbia, Bellingham felt like the only show in town.

Jude Bellingham Euro 2024 stats

England vs. Serbia

96% — England started smoothly in possession before losing their way but Bellingham barely put a foot wrong all night. Out of 70 passes, 67 found the mark, giving him a pass completion rate of 96%, only matched by the deeper-lying Rice and Guehi. As well as doing plenty of accomplished work in the opposition half, Bellingham was also accurate with all four of his long passes.

6 — Bellingham’s game is not all about the glory. According to Sofascore, he completed six “defensive actions”, a number only bettered by senior centre-back Stones. He weighed in with three tackles — more than any other England player — and two clearances, the same amount as Stones and fellow defenders Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier.

15 — Bellingham contested the joint-highest number of duels of any England player alongside captain Harry Kane and he was top of the standings for ground duels (14).

4 — At times it felt like Serbia players were taking it in turns to try and make a mark on Bellingham. The four fouls he was awarded could easily have been higher as he frequently put himself in harm’s way to take the pressure off his team. On a night when England needed a matchwinner and people to do the dirty work, Bellingham again showed himself to be adept at both sides of the game.
