Bulls Could Be Excellent Fit For Hawks Center in Pivotal Offseason Trade

The Chicago Bulls are looking to fortify their frontcourt this summer and are reportedly fixated on a former NBA rebounding champion.

Matt Moore, senior NBA writer for Action Network, reported on Tuesday that Chicago is in talks with the Atlanta Hawks regarding veteran center Clint Capela. Moore wrote that “Capela is a popular trade target with the Grizzlies, Wizards, Pelicans, and Bulls having expressed interest.”

Capela, 30, averaged 11.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game in 73 games for Atlanta in 2023-24.

Capela has a 62.1 career field goal percentage and led the NBA in rebounding with 14.3 rebounds per game during the 2021-22 season; he also finished sixth in Defensive Player of the Year voting that season.

Selected at No. 25 by the Houston Rockets in the 2014 NBA Draft, Capela broke out during the 2017-18 season with averages of 13.9 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game for Houston, finishing second in Most Improved Player voting.

Capela was traded to Atlanta in 2020. He is set to earn $22.3M next season, the last year of his current contract.

Chicago’s interest in Capela stems from their obvious rebounding needs. The Bulls are expecting to lose Andre Drummond in free agency, leaving their frontcourt depth depleted beyond Nikola Vučević, who turns 34 in October.

Capela would likely welcome a huge role in Chicago, as he’s seen his minutes per game diminish in each season since joining the Hawks.

The Bulls see in Capela an upgrade from Drummond, not to mention a contract that doesn’t strap Chicago fiscally. With Capela’s deal set to expire at the end of next season, the Bulls could benefit from an entire year of Capela in his prime without having to commit to him long-term.

Chicago and Capela could be a perfect match, but the Bulls’ brass will have to move aggressively on a deal with other suitors for Capela lurking.
