Germany vs. Hungary live score: Euro 2024 updates, result with hosts looking to build on Scotland rout

Germany must overcome a recent bogey team if they are to keep their storming start to Euro 2024 on track.

The hosts hammered Scotland 5-1 on opening night in Munich, producing a display to delight head coach Julian Nagelsmann. Die Mannschaft now face a Hungary side who are effectively part of the reason why Nagelsmann is in charge in the first place.

In three attempts, his predecessor, Hansi Flick, was unable to manage a single victory against Marco Rossi’s team.

Hungary gave Germany an almighty scare at Euro 2020, with Leon Goretzka’s late goal salvaging a 2-2 draw to spare them from a group-stage exit. Rossi’s side then shared a 1-1 draw with Germany in the UEFA Nations League before claiming a 1-0 victory in Budapest.

The challenge for Nagelsmann and his players is to underline that this is a different Germany to the Flick era. If they do so as emphatically as they did against Scotland, a Hungary side that lost 3-1 to Switzerland in their first game will be staring at an early exit.

The Sporting News is following Germany vs. Hungary live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Germany vs. Hungary live updates, highlights from Euro 2024

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Today’s early kickoff is in Group B, where Croatia have come from behind to lead a spirited Albania 2-1. Andrej Kramaric netted the equaliser for Zlatko Dalic’s side and joined an exclusive club in the process.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: It will be fascinating to see how much that patchy recent form against Hungary counts for anything. It’s easy to forget that there was plenty of uncertainty around Germany heading into their home tournament before blowing Scotland out of the water. Die Mannschaft were knocked out in the group stage of the past two World Cups and only got through to the last 16 at Euro 2020 after snatching a late point against today’s opponents. England then ended their interest. But it’s only taken one authoritative performance for people top imagine this Germany team once again as the brutal tournament machine of old.

Hungary performed creditably enough in their defeat to Switzerland to suggest they can at least provide a true barometer of where Germany are at. How much of last Friday came down to the brilliance of Nagelsmann’s side and how much was down to Scotland being utterly dreadful?

Germany vs. Hungary lineups, team news, starting 11

With his team close to securing qualification, Nagelsmann is not expected to tinker too much with his lineup.

Niclas Fullkrug performed well as a substitute in the thrashing of Scotland, but it’s likely that Kai Havertz will continue as the spearhead of Germany’s attack.

Germany projected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Neuer (GK) — Kimmich, Rudiger, Tah, Mittelstadt — Andrich, Kroos — Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz — Havertz

Hungary are likely to stick with a largely unchanged side from the Switzerland defeat, although Bendeguz Bolla could come in at right wing-back for Attila Fiola.

Le Havre defender Loic Nego, and Parma’s Botond Balogh, are still recovering from injuries suffered prior to the tournament. They did not train with the team on Tuesday and will not be ready to face Germany.

Barnsley’s Callum Styles, Hertha Berlin’s Marton Dardai, and Torino’s Krisztofer Horvath took part in the team session and should be fit to make the squad.

Hungary projected starting lineup (3-4-2-1): Gulacsi — Lang, Orban, Szalai — Fiola, A. Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez — Sallai, Szoboszlai — Varga
