Another Vikings veteran changes positions during offseason

You don’t often see players change positions during the offseason. Once you get to this level of the game, it is a very difficult process. There are so many nuances that you need to have down in the NFL and things you can’t get away with like you can in college.

The Minnesota Vikings already have one player making a position change, as N’Keal Harry is moving from wide receiver to tight end. It’s a change that arguably should have happened earlier with his lack of success on the outside.

Harry isn’t the only player changing position. According to The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, cornerback NaJee Thompson is making the shift to safety.

Switched positions, but his value remains in his special teams prowess. Likely to make the roster.

This is an interesting one for the Vikings. While they are deep at safety, it was obvious that Thompson didn’t have the athleticism required to play on the outside and isn’t shifty enough to play in the slot consistently. Safety is a spot where he might be able to play consistently.

However, Thompson isn’t someone who is going to play a lot of defensive snaps. He played just one last season for the Vikings as a rookie. He is a special teams maven and that will continue.
