Marlins lefty hurler available, could give Braves ‘better chance of winning it all’

It’s no secret that the Atlanta Braves are looking to add a starting pitcher, and a left-hander from the Miami Marlins could be just what Atlanta needs.

The Braves are undoubtedly making calls to various teams as they zero in on a starter. Atlanta has been monitoring the situations of Garrett Crochet, Luis Severino, Erick Fedde, and Kyle Hendricks, among others.

An additional option for Atlanta is to give the Marlins a call about Jesús Luzardo.

Luzardo has been mentioned as a likely trade piece in multiple reports of late, including a report by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter that named Atlanta as the club most likely to land Luzardo.

“The top of the Braves rotation has been terrific, but the revolving door in the fifth spot has shined a light on the unproven nature of their depth, and Luzardo would shore up one of the few glaring holes on the roster,” Reuter said.

What distinguishes Luzardo from some of the other possible acquisitions for Atlanta is that Luzardo has multiple years remaining on his contract. Such a high degree of team control might also make Miami hesitant to move Luzardo, especially to a team in its division, according to Reuter.

“It’s also fair to wonder if the Marlins will even entertain the idea of trading Luzardo with his multiple years of remaining club control to a division rival,” Reuter said. “With all of that said, the Braves are in win-now mode and the Marlins have already waved the white flag, so matching up on a deal makes sense … It gives the Braves a better chance of winning it all in 2024.”

The 26-year-old Luzardo had a breakout season last year in Miami, striking out 208 and compiling a 3.58 ERA over 178 2/3 innings.

To get traded from the Marlins to a World Series contender would be a career-shifting moment for Luzardo. Will Atlanta make a deal?
